Northern Yellowstone National Park The table below is a short summary of the rock types found in the Northern Yellowstone Park region. The information is from the class-note materials prepared for us by Dr. Paul Doss. Because the Northern part of the Park was outside of the Yellowstone caldera and eruptions, it preserves much of the geological records that the Central Plateau has lost. Key factors to this area include the proximity of the Beartooth plateau which helped form glaciers in Yellowstone and the Absaroka volcanoes whose andesite lava contributed much of the fertile soil in this part of the park.
