Clark Fork Rafting

We put in at Cyr Bridge, floated through the Alberton Gorge, and then took out at Tarkio.  The river runs a fair ways from I-90 freeway so much of the time you are in very secluded areas.  Expect kayakers and other rafters however - this place is not a secret!  The area is part of the Glacial Lake Missoula which was formed by Ice Dams and which flooded downstream multiple times as the ice dams collapsed.  These floods took rocks from this area all the way to Washington (e.g. the Coulees and Dry Falls areas) and Oregon (e.g. the Willamette River valley).  You can see signs of the floods along the river bank walls.  The Alberton Gorge has the best rapids - they are big but not technical with obstructions rising in the middle of the rapid. They are great fun to hit head on!!  In this area,  the Clark Fork River (that huge body of water by I-90 for many miles) is constrained to surface river width of 30-40 feet - that really gets the water pumping.   We were guided by Curtis Davey, a great Montana resource and artist.  In addition to raft guiding, he also is a fishing guide and artist extraordinaire - his web site address is MontanaOutdoorExperience.com  and he can be reached by email at: daveymoe@mtwi.net

It always looks easy at the start.
