Day 7, Tuesday, August 29, 2006 (Michelle Lakes Golden Trout) AB was first up, about 6AM, to find Steve starting preparations for breakfast. Soon after we were all enjoying a high altitude breakfast of camp coffee, juice, fruit, sweet rolls and cereal. We hadn’t seen many mosquitoes to this point, but they were definitely up and buzzing this morning. The waders felt good this cold morning as we hiked down to the lake….besides, they kept the mosquitoes at bay. We fully expected to start catching fish again as we had yesterday, but the fish had a different idea. Apparently the low-pressure system that had moved in overnight had them in a funk. There were no fish cruising the shoreline and nothing from the day before was working. AB was going thru his extensive collection of fly boxes looking for a solution when he noticed a Jeff Morgan small chartreuse, bead-head, red-butt, wooly bugger that Jeff had tied for landlocked Atlantic Salmon. For some unknown reason, I decided to try it. Two casts later, I was wrestling with a large male Golden Trout. Shortly after, another, then another. For some reason these fish just wouldn’t leave this little green monster alone. Fortunately AB had several of the flies and soon all the guys were catching fish on the little bright green fly.
Steve came down to the lake and asked how we were doing. We told him the flies from yesterday weren’t working. He wasn’t sure what we should try, then we showed him the green bugger and told him it was working…..by now we’d caught about 20 fish. Steve just shook his head…..a chartreuse wooly bugger…whoda guessed!
Steve had another great lunch prepared for us and we took a break from fishing to enjoy the meal…..and rest our backs in the comfortable camp chairs. What luxury in such a remote place. Steve informed us that we needed to get our camping gear together as the copter was coming at about 11:30AM to pick up everything but our fishing gear. They’d be back at about 5:30PM to pick us up. AM, AB & MS returned to the lake while JR and GK went for a hike. GK hiked up to the upper lake, while JR hiked up a high ridge overlooking the lake. The sun peeked out between the clouds and we had high hopes that the sunshine would improve the fishing. It wasn’t to be, the fishing was still a bit slow, but we did managed to catch another dozen or so fish. It was hard to get too much of seeing these beautiful fish.
The sky clouded up and it began to rain with a little snow mixed in. The weather was definitely getting worse. At 5:00 we headed for camp and stowed our fishing gear, shortly after we heard the unmistakable sounds of an approaching helicopter. |
